Volkswagen launches the all-new Polo Sedan

It is an exciting week for Malaysian motorists. Having welcomed the Proton Prevé on Monday, we now usher in the arrival of Volkswagen's all-new Polo Sedan, now the most affordable German car in the market at RM99,888 retail before on-road costs.

Contrary to what many might think, this is not a booted version of the Polo hatch, but a new car developed from ground up to cater for cost-conscious needs of developed markets. It is therefore not equipped with technologies like TSI, DSG or anything of that sort.

Its mechanical layout is as straightforward as it comes - a rudimentary engine paired to a conventional automatic transmission sitting on a chassis that utilizes torsion beam suspension and drum brakes at the rear. The 1.6-litre mill in the engine room is devoid of variable valve timing or any fancy tech stuff. Don't confuse this with the 1.6 FSI engine that powered the Golf Mk V. It's not that advanced.

What it does get is 16 valves, twin camshafts and multi-point fuel injection. Outputs are rated at 103hp @ 5,250rpm and 153Nm @ 3,800rpm. It is mated to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual override. With this combo, the Polo Sedan is capable of a 12.3-second century sprint on the way to a top speed of 183kph. Official fuel consumption is 6.5 l/100km.

Its mechanical simplicity is not unexpected, and for drivers seeking a fuss-free motoring experience, this may even be a boon. It is not a barebones vehicle, however. There is still cruise control, steering-mounted controls, electric boot release, one-touch power windows all-round (with anti-pinch), and trip computer to look forward to. Safety features include four airbags, ABS, EBD, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

We are currently in Langkawi having attended the Polo Sedan's national launch last night. We will be testing the car shortly and we look forward to bring you first driving impressions soon.
